It Starts With A Question
Each of thatgamecompany’s projects starts with a question, and for Journey the question was “what would an online experience be like if we removed many or all of the conventions of console online play?” Except for the standard combination of moving your character around using the analog stick or SIXAXIS controller and a button to jump, the game eschews almost all other normal aspects found in a traditional console game.
With only the ability to emit a wordless shout or a musical note, Journey is an interactive parable, an anonymous online adventure to experience a person’s life passage and their intersections with others. Whether traveling alone or with a stranger, the player continues to be presented their own question to answer: What does this journey mean to me?
Results And Successes
For Journey I stepped away from the Producer role to focus on running the studio and creating a great team including securing the amazing Robin Hunicke for the Executive Producer role. Our largest team yet with a core team of 18 developers, the game became the fastest-selling game ever released on the PlayStation Network in Europe and North America.
Along with all the commercial success Journey received critical acclaim achieving over 80 award nominations and selections and winning a record 8 times at the 16th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards – often referred to as video games’ Oscars. Featuring stunning visuals, a Grammy-nominated musical score and innovative online cooperative gameplay, players can now take this emotionally-charged trip on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
